Colonel (Ret) Peter G Napolitano MD joined the University of Washington in October 2017 after retiring from 28+ years of service to the Army. He currently serves as the Director of WISH for Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He previously was the Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) fellowship program at Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord for the last 15 years. Dr. Napolitano holds academic appointments as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Washington, Seattle WA and Uniformed Services University of Health Services, in Bethesda, MD. Dr Napolitano is the chair emeritus of the Armed Forced MFM Research Network and serves as advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Defense National Smallpox Vaccination in Pregnancy Registry. He served as a consultant to the American Congress of OB-GYN Presidential Task Force on Patient Safety in Residence Education.
Dr. Napolitano has been a clinical consultant for the Healthcare Team Coordination Program, TRICARE Management Activity, Defense Healthcare Agency, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Team STEPPS initiative since 2002. He has given over 55 invited Grand round lectures on Medical Team Training nationally.
Dr. Napolitano has 53 publications in peer reviewed journals and was a consultant to the Joint Commission for “Patients as Partners: Implementation Guide, National Patient Safety Goals #13. He is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He is an editorial reviewer Obstetrics & Gynecology and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a General Surgeon where he also established Team STEPPS programs, training over 5,000 personal in combat zones; he received two Bronze Starts for his efforts. He served as Director for Team STEPPS training for the Joint Forces Combat Trauma Medical Course in San Antonio, TX from 2008-2017.
